Free Sitemap Validator & Splitter
Paste a sitemap or sitemap index and check the structure, URLs, dates and limits. Oversized files can be split into valid pieces with an index.
Free, with no sign-up. Fair-use limits apply. Text you paste is processed and not stored. To enforce the limits we keep any domain or address you enter and a scrambled form of your IP address for 30 days, as described in our privacy policy.
What is checked
The validator confirms that the XML is well formed, that it uses the right root element, that every address is absolute and valid, and that dates are in a format search engines accept. It flags duplicates, addresses on a different domain from the one you expect, and files that exceed the protocol limits of 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed.
How to use it
Paste the XML, optionally enter the domain the URLs should belong to, and press Validate sitemap. If the file is too large you can choose a size to split it into and the tool produces the smaller files together with a sitemap index that points to them.
Common sitemap problems
- URLs that redirect, return errors or are blocked by robots.txt.
- Mixed http and https addresses, or www and non-www.
- A lastmod date that is always today, which teaches crawlers to ignore it.
- Priority and changefreq values, which Google ignores, taking up space.
Next steps
To check a sitemap that is already published, use the sitemap checker, which fetches it for you.
Frequently asked questions
Is my XML stored?
No. It is checked and discarded. Only the optional domain you enter is kept for fair-use accounting.
What is the size limit here?
The free version accepts up to 60,000 characters. Longer files can be checked with an account.
Do I need a sitemap at all?
Small, well linked sites can be crawled without one, but a sitemap helps search engines find new and changed pages faster.
