Free Sitemap Checker

Enter the address of a sitemap or sitemap index and we fetch it, follow the index, and report the structure, the number of URLs and any problems.

Free, with no sign-up. Fair-use limits apply. To enforce them we keep the domain you enter and a scrambled form of your IP address for 30 days, as described in our privacy policy.

What the checker does

It downloads the sitemap the way a crawler would, reads gzip files, follows a sitemap index to its children and reports how many URLs each one holds, whether dates are valid, and whether any limit is exceeded.

How to use it

Enter the full address of the sitemap, usually https://example.com/sitemap.xml, and press Check sitemap. If you are not sure where it is, look at the last lines of your robots.txt file.

What to look for

A healthy sitemap lists only canonical, indexable pages that return 200. If you see thousands of URLs you did not expect, filter pages and parameter URLs are the usual cause. Check a sample with the bulk URL checker.

Frequently asked questions

Does it check every URL in the sitemap?

No. It checks the file itself. Use the bulk URL checker to test a list of addresses, or a full site audit to test them all.

It says it cannot fetch my sitemap.

The server must be reachable from the public internet and must not block our request. Sitemaps behind a login cannot be checked.

Can it read compressed sitemaps?

Yes, gzip files are decompressed automatically.
