Four sitemap types
A standard sitemap lists pages with an optional last-modified date. Image, news and video sitemaps add extra information about media on the page or about news articles, using the fields shown in the menu above the box.
How to use it
Choose the type, then put one entry per line with fields separated by a vertical bar. For a standard sitemap that is the URL and an optional date. Press Generate sitemap and copy the XML into a file named sitemap.xml at the root of your site. Very long lists are split into files of up to 50,000 URLs with an index file.
After you publish it
Add the sitemap address to your robots.txt file with the robots.txt generator, submit it in Google Search Console, and check it with the sitemap validator.
Frequently asked questions
What date format should I use?
A full date such as 2026-09-24, or a date and time with a time zone. The tool warns about anything else.
Should I include every page?
Include pages you want indexed and leave out redirects, error pages, duplicates and noindex pages.
How many URLs can one file hold?
Up to 50,000, and the file must be no more than 50 MB uncompressed.
